A warm, comforting cocktail made with apple cider, bourbon, maple syrup, and a hint of lemon. Ready in under 5 minutes, it’s the perfect drink for fall evenings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 ounces (120 ml) apple cider
  • 2 ounces (60 ml) bourbon (e.g., Buffalo Trace or Maker’s Mark)
  • 1 tablespoon (15 ml) pure maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon (5 ml) fresh lemon juice
  • 1 cinnamon stick (for garnish)
  • 1 star anise pod (optional, for garnish)
  • 1 strip orange peel (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Warm the apple cider in a small saucepan over medium-low heat for 3-4 minutes until steaming (do not boil). Alternatively, microwave in a mug for 45-60 seconds.
  2. Stir in the maple syrup until fully dissolved.
  3. While the cider heats, twist the orange peel over a mug to release oils, rub the rim, and drop the peel into the mug.
  4. In a separate glass, combine the bourbon and lemon juice; stir briefly.
  5. Pour the warm cider mixture into the mug, then add the bourbon-lemon mixture. Stir gently with a cinnamon stick.
  6. Garnish with a star anise pod if desired. Let sit for 30 seconds before serving.

Notes

Do not boil the cider; heat until steaming only. Use fresh lemon juice for best flavor. Toast the cinnamon stick over a gas flame for 10 seconds to enhance flavor. For a non-alcoholic version, skip the bourbon and add an extra ounce of apple cider plus 1/2 teaspoon apple cider vinegar.
