Cozy Spiked Apple Cider Sangria: 5-Ingredient Winter Cocktail

cozy spiked apple cider sangria - featured image

A warm, spiced winter cocktail made with pure apple cider, cinnamon, and bourbon or rum. This simple recipe simmers spices to create a rich, aromatic base before adding alcohol for a cozy, comforting drink.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 gallon (about 2 liters) fresh, unfiltered apple cider
  • 3 to 4 whole cinnamon sticks
  • 1 large orange, sliced (peel on)
  • 1 to 1.5 cups bourbon or dark rum
  • 2 to 4 tablespoons honey or maple syrup (optional, to taste)
  • Optional: Whole cloves or star anise pod

Instructions

  1. Place a large saucepan over medium-low heat. Add the apple cider, cinnamon sticks, and orange slices. Stir gently to combine.
  2. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer (small bubbles, not a rolling boil). Simmer uncovered for 20-30 minutes to concentrate flavors and infuse spices.
  3. Taste the cider. If needed, stir in honey or maple syrup until fully dissolved.
  4. Remove the pot from the heat. Let it cool for 1-2 minutes, then stir in the bourbon or dark rum. Do not boil after adding alcohol.
  5. Strain into a pitcher to remove solids, or serve with them for visual appeal. Ladle into mugs or glasses and garnish if desired.

Notes

For a non-alcoholic version, omit the spirit and add a splash of vanilla extract. To make ahead, prepare the spiced cider base without alcohol and refrigerate for up to a week. Reheat gently before adding alcohol. Toasting cinnamon sticks lightly before adding can enhance flavor. Avoid boiling the alcohol to preserve its character.
