Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound (450 g) ground beef (80/20 blend recommended)
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder (optional)
  • 6 soft hamburger buns (brioche style recommended)
  • Gluten-free buns (optional substitution)
  • 6 cheddar cheese slices
  • 6 American cheese slices
  • 6 Swiss cheese slices
  • Leafy lettuce leaves (romaine or butter lettuce)
  • 1 large tomato, sliced
  • Pickle slices (dill or bread-and-butter)
  • Sliced red onion rings
  • Avocado slices (optional)
  • Jalapeño slices (optional)
  • Crispy cooked bacon strips (optional)
  • Ketchup
  • Mustard
  • Mayonnaise mixed with a spoonful of Greek yogurt
  • BBQ sauce
  • Butter (for toasting buns)
  • Olive oil (for cooking patties)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently to avoid overworking the meat.
  2. Divide the mixture into 6 equal portions and shape each into a round patty about ¾ inch (2 cm) thick. Make a small indentation in the center of each patty with your thumb.
  3. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and add a drizzle of olive oil. Place patties in the pan, leaving space between each one.
  4. Cook patties for about 4 minutes on the first side without moving them to get a good sear.
  5. Flip patties and add cheese slices immediately. Cook another 3-4 minutes for medium doneness, adjusting time for preferred doneness.
  6. While patties cook, spread softened butter on the insides of the buns and toast cut-side down in another pan or oven for 1-2 minutes until golden and slightly crispy.
  7. Slice tomatoes, onions, pickles, and avocados. Arrange lettuce leaves and set out sauces in small bowls.
  8. Encourage everyone to build their burgers starting with a bun, adding a patty, then toppings and sauces as desired.
  9. Serve immediately with sides like oven fries or carrot sticks.

Notes

Do not overwork the meat to keep burgers tender. Make a thumb indentation in patties to prevent puffing. Toast buns to avoid sogginess. Cook patties thoroughly for younger kids. Use gluten-free buns or lettuce wraps for gluten-free options. Plant-based patties and vegan cheese/mayo can be used for vegetarian/vegan diets.
