A quick and easy crowd-pleasing layered dessert featuring angel food cake, fresh berries, and a creamy citrus-infused topping, perfect for summer gatherings and Independence Day celebrations.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound angel food cake, cubed (store-bought works perfectly)
  • 1 cup fresh strawberries, sliced
  • 1 cup fresh blueberries (can substitute frozen, thawed)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream, cold
  • ½ cup powdered sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup fresh orange juice
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Citrus Syrup: In a small saucepan, combine ¼ cup fresh orange juice and 2 tablespoons granulated sugar. Heat over medium, stirring occasionally until sugar dissolves completely, about 3 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool.
  2. Mix the Creamy Layer: In a large bowl, beat the softened cream cheese until smooth using an electric mixer. Slowly add powdered sugar and vanilla extract, mixing until fully incorporated.
  3. Whip the Cream: In a separate chilled bowl, whip the cold heavy cream until stiff peaks form (about 3-4 minutes). Gently fold the whipped cream into the cream cheese mixture until well combined, careful not to deflate the cream.
  4. Prepare the Fruit: Toss sliced strawberries with fresh lemon juice in a small bowl. Set aside blueberries as is.
  5. Assemble the Dessert: Place half of the cubed angel food cake in the trifle dish. Drizzle half of the cooled citrus syrup over the cake cubes. Spread half of the creamy mixture evenly over the cake, then layer half of the strawberries and blueberries on top.
  6. Repeat the layers: the remaining cake cubes, the rest of the citrus syrup, the remaining cream mixture, and finally, the remaining fruit on top.
  7. Chill: Cover the trifle with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or overnight if possible.
  8. Serve: Just before serving, give the top a gentle stir or leave as is for a beautiful presentation. Garnish with mint leaves or extra berries if desired.

Notes

Chill mixing bowl and beaters before whipping cream for best results. Fold whipped cream gently into cream cheese mixture to keep texture light. Assemble dessert a day ahead for best flavor melding. Use gluten-free cake for gluten-free option. Substitute coconut cream and dairy-free cream cheese for dairy-free/vegan version.
