This Spooky Poison Apple Cider Sangria is a Halloween cocktail that looks genuinely unsettling in the best way, tastes like a crisp autumn day, and comes together in minutes with simple ingredients. It’s the rare Halloween drink that delivers on both spooky appearance and delicious flavor.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 bottle (750 ml) dry white wine (Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc)
  • 2 cups apple cider (not apple juice)
  • 1/2 cup green apple liqueur (like Sour Apple Pucker or apple schnapps)
  • 1/4 cup apple brandy (optional)
  • 2 green apples (Granny Smith), thinly sliced
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 45 drops green liquid food coloring (adjust to desired shade)
  • 1 cup sparkling water or ginger ale
  • Ice cubes (preferably large cubes)

Instructions

  1. Prep the apples: Wash green apples thoroughly. Slice into thin rounds, about 1/4 inch thick. Optionally, use a small cookie cutter to cut out star or bat shapes. Remove seeds. Toss with a squeeze of lemon juice to prevent browning if making ahead.
  2. Combine the liquids: In a large pitcher or punch bowl, pour the entire bottle of white wine, apple cider, green apple liqueur, and apple brandy (if using). Stir gently with a wooden spoon to combine.
  3. Add the color: Start with 4-5 drops of green food coloring. Stir and check the color. Aim for a murky, swampy green. Add 1-2 more drops if needed, but go slowly.
  4. Infuse: Drop in the cinnamon sticks and half of the apple slices. Stir gently. Cover the pitcher and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, preferably 4-6 hours.
  5. Add the fizz: Right before serving, remove the pitcher from the fridge. Remove the cinnamon sticks. Gently stir in the sparkling water or ginger ale.
  6. Serve: Fill glasses with ice cubes. Pour sangria over ice, ensuring some macerated apple slices go into each glass. Garnish with a fresh apple slice or cinnamon stick if desired. Serve immediately.

Notes

Resting time is crucial for flavor melding—do not skip. Add sparkling water just before serving to maintain fizz. For a non-alcoholic version, replace wine with additional apple cider, skip liqueur and brandy, add lemon juice for tartness, and use ginger ale. Gel food coloring is more concentrated and won’t alter taste. Apple slices will brown after a few hours, adding to the ‘poison’ aesthetic. For best presentation, add fresh apple slices right before serving.
